Law Minister warns servitors over ritual disruption at Lingaraj Temple

Bhubaneswar, Jan 15: Expressing serious concern over the stalling of rituals at Bhubaneswar’s Lingaraj Temple due to disputes among servitors, Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan on Wednesday warned of stringent government action if such disruptions recur.
Describing the incident as “unfortunate,” the Minister emphasized that halting rituals and services in the temple is unacceptable. The issue arose after Mahasuara and Badu servitors clashed over conducting the ‘Ghruta Kamala’ ritual during Makar Sankranti, leading to the stalling of rituals since Monday evening. The deity, taken to the Makara Mandap outside the sanctum sanctorum, has remained there for three days without offerings.
A high-level meeting at Harichandan’s residence, attended by the Law Secretary, Endowment Commissioner, and Khurdha District Collector, sought to resolve the impasse. However, with no resolution reached, another meeting is scheduled, involving the Temple Trust Board and servitors.
The Minister stated that servitors would be urged to resume rituals immediately, and the Trust Board would ensure such disruptions are prevented in the future. He clarified that no further interruptions should occur until the Record of Rights is reorganized.
The upcoming meeting will include the ‘Brahmana Nijogs,’ whose absence was noted earlier.
