(OT Webdesk)Odisha is on high alert as the Subarnarekha River nears its peak flood level of 11.40 meters, posing a serious threat to the Balasore district.
As of 6:00 PM, the river at Rajghat has surged to 11.17 meters—well above the danger mark—prompting swift evacuation and flood management measures.
In contrast, the Baitarani and Jalaka rivers are showing signs of recession, offering some relief.
The Department of Water Resources (DoWR) has activated its State Flood Cell for round-the-clock monitoring, with senior engineers deployed on-site to coordinate response efforts.
Evacuations are underway in vulnerable areas like Jaleshwar, Bhograi, and Basta. The Engineer-in-Chief of DoWR is stationed in Balasore to oversee operations directly.
Meanwhile, the Hirakud Dam remains stable with 20 gates open and a controlled inflow of 5.17 lakh cusecs. Other reservoirs, including Rengali, Indravati, Kolab, and Machkund, are also functioning well.
Weather forecasts bring hope, with no heavy rainfall expected until August 1. A weakening low-pressure system over Madhya Pradesh further reduces flood risks.
Light to moderate rain is predicted in the northern districts under a yellow alert.
The Odisha government continues to urge residents in low-lying areas to stay vigilant.
Emergency teams are on standby, and coordinated efforts across agencies reflect the state’s proactive flood management strategy.
