Odisha Braces for Deluge as Low Pressure Triggers Torrential Rainfall Across State

Bhubaneswar(OT Webdesk): The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bhubaneswar, has sounded a red alert for multiple districts in Odisha as a low-pressure area formed over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha continues to intensify.

This weather system, extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, is projected to move west-northwestward toward Jharkhand and north Chhattisgarh in the next 2–3 days.

With the southwest monsoon active across the region, extremely heavy rainfall has already battered Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Sundargarh, while Keonjhar, Angul, and Bargarh witnessed very heavy showers. Deogaon recorded the highest rainfall at 31 cm.

 Weather Warnings

Day 1 (Till July 7 Morning):

  • 🔴 Red Warning: Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Sambalpur
  • 🟠 Orange Warning: Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Balangir, Sonepur + 7 more districts
  • 🟡 Yellow Warning: Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack + 8 others

Day 2 (July 7–8):

  • 🟠 Orange Warning: Keonjhar, Angul, Jharsuguda
  • 🟡 Yellow Warning: Balangir, Kandhamal, Cuttack + others

Day 3–7 (July 8–13):

  • 🟡 Yellow Warnings persist in Kalahandi, Bargarh, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.

 IMD Advisories

The IMD warns of:

  • Potential crop damage (especially banana and papaya)
  • Infrastructure risks, including tree falls and road damage
  • Localised flooding and landslides
  • Possible disruption in road, rail, and air traffic

The public is advised to:

  • Stay indoors during thunderstorms
  • Unplug electrical appliances
  • Refrain from sheltering under trees
  • Avoid fishing and marine activities
