Heavy Rain Batters Odisha as IMD Issues Red Alert; State on High Alert Until July 5

Odisha IMD orange alert

Bhubaneswar, June 30(OT Webdesk): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread and intense rainfall across Odisha until July 5, following the formation of a low-pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal.

The disturbance is expected to impact multiple districts with moderate to extremely heavy rainfall, prompting a tiered warning system and a proactive state response.

On June 30, a Red Warning — signalling the highest level of alert — was issued for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, and Balasore, citing the likelihood of severe flooding, traffic disruptions, and risk to life and property.

An Orange Warning remains active for seven districts, while 15 districts have been placed under a Yellow Warning.

Looking ahead to July 1, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, and Jharsuguda remain under Orange Alert, with potential hazards including landslides in hilly regions, waterlogging, and power outages.

Another 14 districts are on Yellow Alert for isolated heavy showers.

In response, Odisha’s Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has activated district-level control rooms and mobilised ODRAF, NDRF, and fire services in vulnerable zones.

Fishermen have been strongly advised to avoid venturing into the sea, as conditions in the Bay of Bengal turn treacherous.

Citizens are urged to follow government advisories, stay indoors during peak rainfall hours, and refrain from travelling through waterlogged or low-lying areas.
