The city of Bhubaneswar, fondly known as the “Temple City,” erupted in vibrant celebrations today as it marked its 77th anniversary as the capital of Odisha.
The two-day festivities, commencing on April 13, blend cultural pride with modern aspirations, aligning with the ongoing “Odia Pakhya” (Odia Fortnight) from April 1 to 14. The event showcases Bhubaneswar’s remarkable journey from a planned city envisioned by German architect Otto Königsberger to a thriving hub of education, sports, and technology.
The celebrations kicked off with a solemn floral tribute at the foundation stone plaque near the Odisha Legislative Assembly, laid by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, on April 13, 1948. A flag-hoisting ceremony led by a distinguished chief guest followed, symbolizing the city’s enduring legacy. A spirited civilian parade featuring college students and musical bands marched from Rabindra Mandap to Jayadev Bhawan, captivating onlookers with its vibrancy. To combat the heatwave, only college students participated in the parade, ensuring safety without dampening the festive spirit.
The evening came alive with cultural performances at Utkal Mandap, where traditional Odia art forms, including Odissi dance and folk music, enthralled audiences. A photo exhibition at Jayadev Bhawan, organized by the Information and Public Relations Department, traced Bhubaneswar’s evolution from a city planned for 40,000 residents to a bustling metropolis of over 1.4 million. Government and private buildings across the city were illuminated, and statues of prominent figures were adorned with garlands, adding to the festive grandeur.
The second day, April 14, coincides with the Odia New Year, promising further celebrations, including “A Day for Odia Cuisine,” highlighting dishes like Machha Jhola and Chhena Poda. The state government, under the guidance of Development Commissioner Anu Garg, has ensured meticulous planning, with traffic management and inter-departmental coordination enhancing the event’s inclusivity.
Bhubaneswar’s journey as Odisha’s capital began when it replaced Cuttack in 1948, a year after India’s independence. Designed as one of India’s first planned cities, it has grown into a Tier-2 smart city, earning accolades for its infrastructure and cultural heritage. However, the city faces challenges, balancing its ancient roots—evident in landmarks like the Lingaraj Temple—with rapid urbanization that has transformed green belts into concrete landscapes.
