Bhubaneswar, July 26 (UNI) With a clear vision, robust policy framework, and a focus on inclusive, future-ready infrastructure, Odisha is steadily emerging as a significant maritime hub in India.
The state is making rapid progress in transforming its maritime sector through a futuristic and policy-driven approach led by the Odisha Maritime Board under the guidance of the Commerce & Transport Department.
Government efforts to modernise and expand key ports are helping create robust port-linked economic ecosystems. According to official sources, cargo handling capacity at non-major ports has reached 80 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).
In the financial year 2024–25, Dhamra Port handled 46.08 MTPA, while Gopalpur Port handled 6 MTPA, collectively generating a substantial revenue of Rs 306.15 crore for the state.
Paradip Port Authority, the state’s major port, has once again emerged as the largest cargo-handling major port in India, managing 150.41 MTPA in FY 2024–25.
The adoption of advanced port technologies and the construction of deeper berths are opening new avenues for trade, industry, and regional integration.
Improved international connectivity through Dhamra and Gopalpur ports is enhancing Odisha’s role in global commerce, strengthening export-import operations and expanding market access.
In a major industrial boost, the state government has executed a concession agreement with JSW Utkal Steel Limited for the development of a captive jetty to support its integrated steel plant.
The project entails an investment of Rs.2,104 crore and is expected to generate around 3,450 direct and indirect jobs.
Additionally, the revised concession agreement with Gopalpur Ports Ltd., reflecting the transfer of 95percent equity shares to Adani Ports & SEZ, is set to bring in an investment of Rs.16,554 crore and create approximately 5,000 jobs.
These developments underscore the state’s strategic focus on harnessing its coastline for comprehensive economic growth.
A pioneering emphasis on multi-modal logistics integration at the ports is enhancing operational efficiency and setting the stage for sustainable port development.
To meet the growing demand for skilled maritime professionals, advanced simulators have been installed at the Crew Training Institute in Chandbali and the Odisha Maritime Academy, enabling realistic ship operation training.
