Bhubaneswar, July 25 (UNI) A depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of coastal West Bengal and Bangladesh is expected to trigger heavy rainfall across Odisha, according to Met department sources.
The system moved west-northwestwards at a speed of 13 kmph and crossed the coasts of West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh earlier today.
It is very likely to continue moving west-northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha and Jharkhand over the next 24 hours.
An IMD bulletin stated that squally winds with speeds reaching 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are prevailing over the north Bay of Bengal and along and off the coasts of Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh, and will likely persist for the next 24 hours.
It further forecast squally winds reaching 30–40 kmph, gusting to 50 kmph, over north Odisha from July 26 to July 29, and issued a Yellow Warning for several districts in the state.
Extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty surface winds (40–50 kmph) is very likely at some places in several districts of Odisha.
The sea condition is expected to be rough to very rough over the north Bay of Bengal and along and off the Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh coasts.
Meanwhile, authorities have hoisted Local Cautionary Signal No. III (LC-3) at all ports in Odisha.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into the north Bay of Bengal and along and off the Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh coasts during the period from July 25 to July 29.
