Bhubaneswar, July 24 (UNI) The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) will hold a protest in front of the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) office, Southern Western Range, in Koraput on July 26, condemning the rising incidents of atrocities against women in the state, including two recent rape cases reported from the undivided Koraput district.
Addressing a press conference, BJD Senior General Secretary and Spokesperson Pradeep Majhi today said the BJP-led state government has completely failed to ensure the safety and security of women.
He alleged that in the last 13 months of BJP rule, cases of rape, gang rape, and violence against women have risen alarmingly.
“Even the undivided Koraput region has not been spared,” he said.
Citing a recent case from Malkangiri district, Majhi said a 15-year-old Scheduled Caste girl was raped twice within hours.
“First, three miscreants abducted and gang-raped her. When she was returning home, a truck driver picked her up midway and raped her again,” he added.
In another incident, Majhi highlighted the case of a nursing student from Raighar block in Nabarangpur district, who is now in critical condition at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
The student was initially attacked by a miscreant at Beach Bazaar in Jaipur city.
Though the accused was detained by police for questioning, he was released shortly after.
“Shockingly, the same miscreant later reached the victim’s village, assaulted her again, and
made a video of the act viral on social media,” Majhi alleged.
He added that although the victim’s grandfather filed another FIR, justice has not been served.
Disheartened by the lack of legal action, the student attempted suicide by consuming poison. According to hospital authorities, her condition remains critical.
Referring to a recent Supreme Court observation, Majhi noted that the apex court described the suicide of an FM College student and an attempt to burn a minor girl alive as “shameful,” blaming systemic failure for such tragic incidents.
He asserted that the BJD will continue its agitation until women in the state are assured of safety and justice.
A BJD fact-finding team is scheduled to visit the undivided Koraput district tomorrow to meet the victim and their families.
