Odisha witnessed a powerful wave of solidarity today as the state observed a complete shutdown led by the Odisha Pradesh Congress, demanding justice for Soumyashree Bisi—a student of FM College in Balasore—whose tragic death by self-immolation following alleged exploitation and denial of justice has shaken the conscience of the state.
The bandh, which received overwhelming support in Barbil and Bhadrasahi regions, was not just a call for justice for one student but a clarion demand for the safety and dignity of every woman in Odisha. The Congress party emphasized the need for a judicial probe into the incident and concrete measures to ensure women’s protection across the state.
In Barbil, the shutdown was marked by discipline and peace. Citizens responded to the Congress’s call with democratic spirit, joining hands with party workers to amplify Soumyashree’s plight and demand accountability from the government. Key leaders including Barbil Congress President Amit Kumar Mahant, Kendujhar District Congress General Secretary Vijay Kumar Swain, Champua Youth Congress President Giripriya Umakant Sahu, and PCC member Ashok Thakkar played pivotal roles in mobilizing support.
Bhadrasahi too witnessed strong and peaceful protests. Leaders such as Kendujhar OBC Cell President Jadumani Barik, Odisha NSUI General Secretary Manmath Barik, and Kendujhar DCC General Secretary Dalu Dalabehera led demonstrations across Bhadrasahi, Rugudi, Roida, and Guali, raising their voices for justice and systemic reform.
Local residents across both regions lauded the Congress’s efforts and stood in solidarity with the demand for justice for Soumyashree. Notably, the bandh remained entirely peaceful, reflecting the responsible leadership of the Congress and the cooperative spirit of the public.
This shutdown was more than a protest—it was a collective cry for justice, safety, and dignity for every daughter of Odisha. The Congress has vowed to continue its struggle until a judicial inquiry is initiated and robust safety guarantees for women are established.
