Cuttack, July 18, (OT Webdesk) — In a major policy reversal, Ravenshaw University has withdrawn its controversial directive that prohibited female students, staff, and faculty from remaining on campus beyond 5:30 PM.
The initial restriction—issued in the name of safety—sparked widespread criticism over its gendered nature.
The university rescinded the order on July 18 following pushback from student groups, faculty members, and civil society organisations.
A spokesperson from the administration confirmed that the institution is currently drafting an inclusive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that will apply equally to all university members.
“This policy was never intended to discriminate,” said an internal source. “We’re now working toward a framework that ensures safety without bias.”
The move has reignited the conversation around gender equality in higher education spaces.
While many welcomed the prompt response, others called for deeper reforms to ensure all students feel equally safe and supported regardless of the hour.
As stakeholders await the new SoP, many hope it sets a precedent for equitable campus policies nationwide.
