Odisha CM Announces Rs 20 Lakh Aid, Orders Strict Action After FM College Student Dies

Balasore, July 15 (OT Webdesk)— Tragedy struck Fakir Mohan Autonomous College after Saoumyashree Bisis, a second-year B.Ed student, succumbed to injuries sustained during a self-immolation protest.

The student had alleged sexual harassment and institutional negligence, warning the college’s Internal Complaints Committee of drastic consequences if her plea went unanswered.

Despite repeated appeals and a formal complaint filed on July 1, college authorities failed to take action. The student died at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Monday, sparking public outrage and demands for accountability.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed profound sorrow and announced Rs 20 lakh financial assistance from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. He called for a strict probe and assured that those responsible would be punished under the law.

This incident has reignited discourse around institutional responsibility and the protection mechanisms available to students facing harassment.
