Odisha to introduce new examination pattern for Class V and VIII students

Bhubaneswar, July 9 (UNI) The Odisha government has decided to implement a structured examination system for Class V and Class VIII students at the end of each academic year.
The new pattern is aimed at ensuring the foundational learning levels are achieved before promotion.

The state has proposed key amendments to the Odisha Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules, 2010, through the Odisha Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Amendment) Rules, 2025.

Under the new system, all students in Class V and Class VIII will be required to appear for annual examinations.

If a student fails the examination, they will receive additional instructional support and be given a chance to reappear for the exam within two months of the result declaration.

Students who are unable to meet the required promotion standards even after the re-examination may be retained in the same class.

Importantly, the amendment reiterates that no child shall be expelled from school before the completion of elementary education.

These changes are in accordance with Section 38 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, and will take effect upon their publication in the Odisha Gazette.

The amendments reflect the state’s commitment to improving academic standards while upholding every child’s right to education
