Mayurbhanj Flood Alert: Schools Shut, Emergency Response Teams Deployed

Mayurbhanj flood alert

Mayurbhanj,  – June 30(OT Webdesk): In response to surging flood threats fueled by relentless rainfall and swollen rivers, the Mayurbhanj district administration has declared a one-day holiday for all government and private schools and ordered a three-day closure of Anganwadi centres.

The crisis intensified as water levels in the Subarnarekha and Budhabalanga rivers rose significantly, worsened by inflow from an under-construction dam in neighboring Jharkhand. Authorities fear flash floods in low-lying zones.

State Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari confirmed that the government is in high-alert mode.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is reportedly coordinating with the Jharkhand Chief Minister to manage upstream water releases.

Emergency response units—including NDRF, ODRAF, and the Fire Services—have been stationed across vulnerable areas. Medical teams remain on alert to assist with any rescue or relief operations.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall across northern Odisha until July 5, raising further concerns.

District officials have urged the public to remain indoors and avoid flood-prone zones, as efforts continue to minimize damage and ensure public safety.
