Puri, (OT Webdesk) – The annual Puri Rath Yatra, one of the most significant Hindu festivals, is set to resume today, June 28, 2025, at 9:30 AM, following a delay from the previous day.
The grand procession, which began on June 27, 2025, will see the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra continue their journey from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, drawing millions of devotees and tourists alike.
The Rath Yatra, a tradition dating back centuries, symbolises the deities’ annual visit to their aunt’s home, the Gundicha Temple.
The festival is marked by the pulling of massive, intricately decorated chariots by devotees, a practice that embodies unity, devotion, and cultural heritage.
Yesterday’s partial commencement was due to logistical challenges, but preparations have been finalised to ensure a smooth continuation today.
Nandighosha, the chariot of Lord Jagannath, stands out as the largest among the three, featuring a yellow and red canopy, 16 wheels, and a height of 44 feet 3 inches.
It is followed by Taladhwaja, the chariot of Lord Balabhadra, and Darpadalana, the chariot of Devi Subhadra.
Each chariot is adorned with vibrant colours, intricate carvings, and religious symbols, reflecting the rich craftsmanship and spiritual significance of the event.
The resumption of the Rath Yatra is anticipated with great enthusiasm, as devotees from across India and abroad gather to participate in this sacred journey.
The event not only holds religious importance but also boosts local tourism and economy, with Puri transforming into a hub of cultural activities during the festival.
Authorities have ensured stringent security measures and smooth traffic management to accommodate the large influx of visitors.
The Odisha government, in collaboration with temple authorities, has also arranged for live streaming and media coverage to reach a global audience, highlighting the festival’s international appeal.
As the chariots move towards the Gundicha Temple, the atmosphere in Puri is expected to be electric, with chants, music, and celebrations filling the air.
The Rath Yatra, a testament to Odisha’s enduring traditions, continues to be a beacon of faith and cultural pride for millions.
