Barbil, June 7 (OT Webdesk)– In a grand celebration marking World Environment Day, Native Voice organised a major event at the Barbil Town Hall, attracting over 600 participants from various sectors. The focus of the event was on pollution control and sustainable development in mining regions, with the aim of raising awareness and inspiring action.
Former Chief Minister Madhu Koda received a traditional welcome at the Nalda border, followed by an enthusiastic bike rally escorting him to Barbil. Dignitaries were honoured at Rungta Town Hall, recognising their contributions to environmental awareness.
Koda expressed concern over the pollution caused by mining and stressed the need for strict environmental regulations. He urged both governments and industries to take collaborative and concrete measures to ensure that future generations have access to clean air and water.
The event was chaired by Nilamani Mahanta, who was acknowledged for his commitment to environmental leadership. Rasanand Behera, Secretary of Native Voice, explained that each year, one citizen is given this honour, and this time, Mahanta received it.
Prominent Goan environmental activist Ramesh Gons emphasised the critical need for compliance with environmental laws in mining operations. He called for strict guidelines to be followed by both governments and corporate entities.
The gathering also recognised media professional Avinash Mishra, social worker Vikash Sarogi, and Keonjhar’s ‘Sapling Man’ Ramesh Chandra Mishra, along with Narayani Minerals and the Bolani Bazaar Committee, for their contributions to environmental protection.
In a significant initiative, the Forest Department distributed torchlights and grain storage bins to rural communities, aiming to safeguard natural resources and promote sustainable living.
The event concluded with a pledge to reduce plastic waste, symbolised by the distribution of sustainable bags and bottles. The celebration successfully boosted environmental awareness and motivated local communities toward sustainability-driven action.
This dynamic initiative has left a lasting impact, reinforcing the urgent need for responsible mining practices and environmental conservation.
