Cyber Scammers Dupe Retired Bank Manager of ₹5 Lakh Using Fake Helpline

Cyber Fraud in India

Bhubaneswar, 28 May (OT Webdesk) – Cybercriminals in Odisha continue to refine their deceptive tactics, preying on unsuspecting citizens through fraudulent helplines and AI-driven scams. In the latest incident, a retired bank manager lost ₹5 lakh while attempting to replace a TV remote.

Seeking assistance, the victim searched online for a customer service number, unknowingly landing on a fraudulent contact operated by scammers.

The fraudsters convinced him to download an app, ostensibly for a small payment, but instead gained unauthorised access to his banking details.

Within minutes, multiple unauthorised transactions drained his account.

Cyber police have launched an investigation, urging citizens to remain vigilant against online fraud.

Officials advise verifying customer service numbers through official company websites and avoiding unverified app downloads.

This incident highlights the growing sophistication of digital fraudsters, often leveraging AI to gain control over social media and mobile accounts.

Experts recommend adopting multi-factor authentication and regularly updating passwords to mitigate risks.

For those affected, authorities stress the importance of reporting scams immediately to enhance recovery chances and prevent further exploitation.
