Puri Gajapati Maharaja Opposes ‘Jagannath Dham’ Renaming for Digha Temple

Puri Gajapati Maharaja Opposes ‘Jagannath Dham’

Puri, ( OT webdesk) — The revered Puri Gajapati Maharaja Shri Dibyasingha Deb has voiced strong opposition to renaming Digha Jagannath Temple as Jagannath Dham, asserting that the designation has never been associated with any Jagannath temple before.

Following a Srimandir Management Committee review meeting, the Maharaja emphasised that Odisha’s government has already reached out to the West Bengal Chief Minister to officially withdraw the renaming decision.

The temple, constructed and managed by the West Bengal government, operates under a designated trust rather than private administration.

Meanwhile, the Srimandir Management Committee has also resolved to implement height restrictions on buildings constructed around the Shri Jagannath Temple to preserve its traditional skyline and spiritual sanctity.

Concerns have grown over unregulated tall structures, particularly near Sri Gundicha Temple, prompting the Urban Development Department to take action.

Adding to the efforts of cultural preservation, the committee has decided to patent all terminology related to Srimandir to ensure protection against misuse and maintain the temple’s historical and cultural identity.

Officials believe these proactive steps will reinforce the heritage and integrity of Shri Jagannath Temple, shielding it from inappropriate branding and structural threats.
