Konark,( OT Webdesk) – May 25, 2025 The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is taking strategic steps to remove sand from the Jagmohan (assembly hall) of Konark’s iconic Sun Temple.
On Saturday morning, a tunnel construction project was initiated under the supervision of ASI Director General (Conservation), Dr. Yaduvir Singh Rawat.
A specialised technical team, including experts from IIT Kharagpur and a core committee of 15 members, conducted an initial assessment of the temple’s structural status.
Their discussions focused on developing a mechanical platform to facilitate safe sand removal without compromising the integrity of the ancient monument.
Officials inspected the upper sanctum of the temple to gauge its condition.
Reports indicate that the temple remains structurally sound, and the sand removal process will be conducted in a measured and secure manner.
This initiative marks a significant preservation effort for one of India’s most cherished heritage sites.
