Bhubaneswar, Odisha – Internationally acclaimed sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has etched his name in history by becoming the first Indian to receive the prestigious Fred Darrington Sand Master Award. This honor was bestowed upon him during the Sandworld 2025 International Sand Art Festival in Weymouth, UK.
Pattnaik’s breathtaking 10-foot sand sculpture of Lord Ganesha, symbolizing “World Peace,” captivated global audiences and earned accolades from dignitaries including Weymouth Mayor Jon Orell and Indian High Commission officials. The event marked the centenary of Fred Darrington, regarded as the father of sand art in the UK.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, during a felicitation ceremony at Lok Seva Bhawan, Bhubaneswar, praised Pattnaik as a “pride of Odisha” and an “asset to India.” He expressed confidence that Pattnaik’s art would continue to elevate the cultural presence of Odisha and India globally.
A Padma Shri awardee, Pattnaik has participated in over 65 international sand art festivals and championships. His accolades include the Italian Golden Sand Art Award and Russia’s Golden Sand Master Award. As the brand ambassador for Odisha Tourism’s International Sand Art Festival, Pattnaik uses his artistry to convey messages of peace, environmental conservation, and social harmony.
This latest recognition not only celebrates his immense talent but also reinforces Odisha’s standing as a hub of cultural heritage. With global admiration pouring in, Pattnaik’s journey remains a testament to the power of art in bridging communities and fostering peace.
