Odisha’s Lakhpati Didi Initiative Leads the Nation in Women Empowerment

Odisha Lakhpati Didi initiative

Odisha has emerged as a shining example of rural transformation by topping the nation in the Central Government’s Lakhpati Didi initiative. This innovative program, aimed at enabling rural women to earn at least ₹1 lakh annually through sustainable livelihoods, has seen remarkable success in the state.

Under the leadership of the Odisha Livelihoods Mission (OLM) and the Department of Mission Shakti, over 14 lakh rural women have been empowered, with Odisha achieving 82% of its targeted 17.59 lakh beneficiaries. A door-to-door campaign identified potential Lakhpati Didis based on their income levels, skills, and aspirations. Customised Business Development Plans (BDPs) were created to ensure tailored support for each individual.

From practical training in tailoring and food processing to financial support for Self Help Groups (SHGs), the initiative has transformed lives across Odisha’s villages. Women are not only earning more but are also gaining confidence and self-reliance. Financial aids such as Revolving Funds and Community Investment Funds have been scaled up, further strengthening their entrepreneurial journeys.

With this achievement, Odisha sets a benchmark for other states in empowering women and fostering sustainable development at the grassroots level.
