Bhubaneshwar, March 20, 2025: Manipal Hospital Bhubaneshwar has successfully performed a rare and complex brain surgery on a 14-day-old baby suffering from an intracranial hematoma. This was the first case of its kind in Odisha and highlights the hospital’s expertise in handling such critical conditions in newborns.
The baby, born in Rourkela, showed symptoms of a serious brain issue. The worried parents then brought the baby to Manipal Hospital Bhubaneshwar, where Dr. Sunil Kumar Patra, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon, diagnosed the baby with an intracranial hematoma (accumulations of blood inside the skull). This condition is usually seen in older adults, making it extremely rare in newborns, occurring in only 1 in 1,000 live births and 1-2 per 100,000 children per year.
Dr. Patra and his expert team performed a delicate surgery on the baby’s right side of the brain. The procedure required high precision and careful post-surgery management. The team included Dr. Bhagyaranjan Jena,, Neuro Anaesthesiologist, Dr. Janki Ballav Pradhan, Pediatric Consultant and the hospital’s dedicated critical care and OT staff.
Dr. Sunil Kumar Patra, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon, Manipal Hospital Bhubaneshwar said, “Operating on a 14-day-old baby’s brain is extremely challenging because the tissues are so delicate. Such cases are almost unheard of among newborns, as brain hemorrhages are typically seen in the elderly. This case was a major milestone, and I am proud of our team for making it a success.”
Dr. Saktimaya Mohapatra, Hospital Director, Manipal Hospital Bhubaneshwar said, “This case shows the advanced medical care available at our hospital. Successfully treating such a rare and complex condition in a newborn proves our commitment to top-quality neurosurgery and neonatal care.”
The baby’s parents expressed their happiness and gratitude, saying, “We had lost hope after visiting multiple hospitals. But when we came to Manipal Hospital Bhubaneshwar, we felt reassured. Dr. Patra and his team saved our baby’s life, and we will always be grateful.
After the surgery, the baby was closely monitored in the intensive care unit. Now, at five months old, the baby is doing well with no health issues, which is a huge success in neonatal neurosurgery.
This incredible case highlights Manipal Hospital Bhubaneshwar’s dedication to providing advanced and life-saving medical care, giving hope to families facing complex health challenges.
