Bhubaneswar, Feb 22: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday assured Nepal Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba that stringent action will be taken against those involved in the alleged harassment of Nepali students at KIIT Deemed University in Bhubaneswar. The assurance came during a telephonic conversation between the two leaders, following concerns raised over the recent incidents at the university.
The Chief Minister emphasized that students from Nepal are like Odisha’s own children and assured that the state government will ensure their safety and security. “We are taking appropriate steps to address the issue. The government is committed to restoring the faith and confidence of Nepali students in Odisha,” he said.
Later, the Chief Minister held discussions with two Nepalese embassy officials, Naveen Raj Adhikari and Sanjiv Sharma, who met him at Lok Seva Bhawan in Bhubaneswar. During the meeting, Majhi informed them that the Odisha police have arrested ten people in connection with the KIIT controversy. He reiterated the state government’s commitment to ensuring justice for Nepali students and restoring normalcy on the campus.
The Nepalese embassy officials thanked the Odisha government for its swift action, particularly regarding the death by suicide of a Nepali girl student and the subsequent harassment of other students from Nepal. They stated that Nepal shares a long-standing cordial relationship with Odisha, and this bond will continue in the future.
They further mentioned that parents and guardians of Nepali students at KIIT have expressed satisfaction over the prompt steps taken by the Odisha government, ensuring the safety of students from the neighboring country.
