Protest demands harsh punishment for sanitation union leader’s killers

Bhubaneswar, Jan 9: The murder of Sahadev Nayak, president of the BMC Sanitation Employees’ Association, sparked a significant protest in Bhubaneswar on Thursday, just a day after he was brutally hacked to death. A large gathering of sanitation workers and others demonstrated near Sishu Bhawan Chhak, demanding the death penalty for those involved in the shocking crime that occurred in broad daylight in the Rasulgarh area.
Protesters expressed their outrage over the gruesome murder, while Nayak’s wife met with the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) to seek justice for her husband. Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das stated that the sanitation workers felt compelled to take to the streets due to the fear and shock stemming from their leader’s murder. Efforts are being made by Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials and police to engage in dialogue with the protesters to address their concerns.
Sahadev Nayak was attacked near the Rasulgarh flyover while returning on his scooter after dropping off his daughter at school. In connection with the murder, the Commissionerate Police have arrested three primary suspects, including a woman. The accused—Laxmidhara Naik, Rocky Naik, and Lipika Naik—were apprehended by a special police team in Saranakula, Nayagarh district, and are reportedly residents of Kedarpalli and nearby areas.
