Bhubaneswar, Nov 27: Two individuals were arrested in Odisha’s Malkangiri district for allegedly duping people by impersonating police officials and lawyers from Bhubaneswar.
According to reports, the accused, identified as Kartik Rautaray and Ekan Pani from Nayagarh district, cheated the Chalanguda Sarpanch of over Rs 18,000 in January this year, by pretending to be a Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO). They also deceived two advocates in July, each of whom was swindled out of Rs 10,000 by posing as High Court lawyers.
The victims filed complaints at the Malkangiri police station, prompting the police to initiate an investigation. After a thorough probe, both accused were arrested.
During questioning, the police discovered that Rautaray and Pani had been targeting people by collecting their mobile phone numbers. They used various tactics to extort money, either by making threats or asking for help under the guise of being a colleague from their respective professions. Further investigations are underway to determine their involvement in other similar incidents across the state.
