Bhubaneswar, (Orissa Today), Sept 20: Two individuals accused of drug peddling were convicted by the Additional Judge-cum-Special Judge in Bhubaneswar on Friday, receiving sentences of 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. The convicted duo, Dipak Kumar Nayak alias Raza from Kaliapani in Jajpur district and Shyam Behera from the Forest Park area of Bhubaneswar, were found guilty under Sections 21(c) and 29 of the NDPS Act in a case initiated by the Special Task Force (STF) of the Odisha police in September 2022.
Both were also fined Rs 1 lakh each, with the court ruling that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional year of rigorous imprisonment.
Raza and Shyam were arrested by the STF in the Sundarpada area of Bhubaneswar while transporting brown sugar/heroin in a car. A search revealed 1.050 kg of brown sugar, which was subsequently sent to the State Forensic Science Laboratory for chemical analysis.
The Scientific Officer at the SFSL, Rasulgarh, confirmed that the substance was Diacetylmorphine, the chemical name for heroin. Following a thorough investigation, a charge sheet was filed against the accused.
